The Incas: My personal path from nothing to something

The Incas: My personal path from nothing to something…

Eviljoe here!  After some thumbs screws and peer pressure I have decided to take anyone bored enough to actually read about my journey along with me to “cheese land” via the Andes Mountains as I build and quickly paint my Mythic Americas Inca force.

So what was it that captured my short attention span and projected me down this dark and twisted path?  Was it the amazing background found in the rulebook, the vision of the Maras in the office cabinet or even the amazing paint jobs the guys have been displaying?  Nope!  Frankly, I have a reputation of chasing the cheese in table top games a reputation that I admit is earned.  After working and playing with the Tribal Nations, the elements of the force that I found most attractive was their ability to influence my opponent’s movement in the form of multiple pin projection.  I would run 4 to 5 minimum size units of Seneca Archers.  Backing these guys up with a few units of Mohawk Warriors was the core to my lists.  Some wolves and Sasquatch would round out the force providing speed and hitting power.  After a quick look at the Incas, I found all these elements and few more I was unaware of.

As we were painting models and putting together the core rule book I was able to get my hands on a few Antisuyu Archer models…about 25 in fact!  So yeah, I had the shooting I wanted which led me to start looking at what other units I might find attractive.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how balanced a force you could build with the Incas.  They have dependable warriors, decent shooting, potent magic and flying units.  Oh yeah, I was in!

Where to Start?  The Starter Set was the perfect answer to that question.  Unlike most of my previous ventures into collecting an army, instead of buying everything and then deciding what I needed, I actually created a list first.  I needed a warlord, several warrior units, probably running them 10 strong, several 5 man archers units and something fast.  I tend not to run monstrosities, opting for more foot troops to capture objectives.

Inca Starter Set – Good place to start

Tearing open the box like a 5 year old on Christmas morning I was giddy with anticipation.  Sapa Warlord..check!  Cuzco warriors with spears and the shieldwall rule…check!  Hey, a unit of 3 condor riders, sweet.  Now I have some speed with a flying unit.  These along with the archers seem perfect.

To bolster the force I added the Oracle and High Priest, not just to sacrifice virgins but they both bolster your troops and improve their performance.  But really, it was to sacrifice virgins.

The Oracle (more virgins to sacrifice)

Nest Steps:

Trimming the flash, washing and applying the undercoat.

Trimming.  I do not plan to enter any of my miniatures in a painting contest.  The goal is to get this warband built and painted quickly to a table top standard.  The trimming process however is important.  With a hobby knife I cut away the flash, bend all the bows and spears back in place, basically try to correct anything that happened in the packing process.  Mold lines…well let’s just say if they are prominent and will stick out once I highlight the miniature then I will scrap them with the hobby knife.  I typically end up cutting my thumb and just ignoring them.

Washing.  I do think the washing step is important, if you have ever played in a one-day tournament you will quickly realize some players in this hobby do not agree.   For your metal miniatures, I do toss them in the sink with hot water and dish soap.  This will remove any nasty stuff left behind and the undercoat will better adhere to the model.

Undercoat.  I have been using the Grey Seer spray from Citadel.  I like it.  It is expensive but I find with my painting style it tends to work the best for me.   Once all of that is done, I am ready to slap some paint on!

Wait:  I did it again.  Running headlong into the abyss of painting everything and not needing half of it.  Ok next step, finalizing my list.  After that, painting, playing and losing.  Then buying and painting more because losing cannot be my fault, must be the miniatures!
